phono/graph est un collectif d’artistes fondé à Osaka en 2011. À travers un travail expérimental et transmédiatique, il explore les interactions entre le son, le texte et le graphisme. Ses membres sont : Fujimoto Yukio, Kishimoto Rinko, Hayashi Aoi, Suzuki Hiroyoshi, Jo Kazuhiro, intext, Yagi Lyota, Nicole Schmid, softpad et Vaclav Pozarek (depuis 2025). phono/graph | artists‍

ECHO est avant tout une étude approfondie, sous forme de livre, du phénomène acoustique de l’écho et de son contexte historique. Cette analyse s’ancre dans la typographie et les éléments graphiques, en jouant à la fois sur la « forme » et le sens du mot echo à travers des contextes culturels variés.

À l’EAC (les halles) à Porrentruy, ECHO devient une mise en espace du contenu du livre. Cette réinterprétation du contenu de ce dernier est enrichie par des ajouts sous la forme de nouvelles œuvres supplémentaires du collectif d’artistes phono/graph ainsi que par celles des deux artistes invités par ebs, Vaclav Pozarek et Philippe Queloz. Il en résulte une forme de lecture élargie et temporaire, qui se déploie horizontalement et verticalement dans l’espace d’art. À l’image du livre ECHO, qui ne suit aucune séquence de pages prédéfinie — assemblé dans un classeur à anneaux sans ordre fixe, conférant à chacun des 80 exemplaires de l’édition un caractère unique — ECHO se découvre et s’expérimente ici de manière visuelle et acoustique renouvelée.

Le livre d’artiste ECHO combine des travaux typographiques réalisés à la fois à partir de procédés d’impression traditionnels tels que la typographie et l’impression à la presse manuelle, et de techniques d’impression numériques, l’impression laser et le vinyle. En tant que projet artistique, il explore le potentiel créatif du livre imprimé en examinant comment l’acoustique peut être traduite en un langage graphique et comment la spatialité peut être transposée dans l’espace bidimensionnel de la page. La lecture de ECHO devient ainsi une expérience active et sensorielle — en accord avec l’intention fondamentale du collectif d’artistes : explorer les intersections entre le son, l’écriture et le graphisme, et repousser les limites des médias traditionnels.‍

‍Le livre d’artiste ECHO est disponible chez ebs : Ce projet de livre est né dans le cadre d’une collaboration entre ebs et phono/graph et a été réalisé au Japon, en Italie et en Suisse ; sa première exposition et présentation a eu lieu en septembre 2025 à l’ebs spazio progetti à Bevagna (Italie).

phono/graph ist ein 2011 in Osaka gegründetes Künstlerkollektiv. In experimentellen, transmedialen Arbeiten erforscht es das Zusammenspiel von Klang, Text und Grafik. Zu den Mitgliedern zählen: Fujimoto Yukio, Kishimoto Rinko, Hayashi Aoi, Suzuki Hiroyoshi, Jo Kazuhiro, intext, Yagi Lyota, Nicole Schmid, softpad und Vaclav Pozarek (seit 2025). phono/graph | artists

ECHO ist zunächst eine umfassende Studie in Buchform über das akustische Phänomen des Echos und seinen historischen Kontext. Die Analyse ist in Typografie und grafischen Elementen verankert und spielt sowohl mit der „Form“ als auch mit der Bedeutung des Wortes echo in seinen unterschiedlichen kulturellen Kontexten.

In EAC (les halles) in Porrentruy wird ECHO zu einer räumlichen Auslegeordnung. Diese Neuinterpretation des Buchinhalts wird durch Ergänzungen in Form zusätzlicher neuer Arbeiten des Künstlerkollektivs phono/graph sowie den beiden von ebs eingeladenen Künstlern Vaclav Pozarek und Philippe Queloz erweitert. Dadurch entsteht eine zeitlich begrenzte, erweiterte Lesart, die sich horizontal und vertikal im Raum der Kunsthalle entfaltet. So wie das Buch ECHO keiner festgelegten Seitenfolge folgt – es ist in einem Ringordner ohne feste Reihenfolge zusammengestellt, was jedem der 80 Exemplare der Edition einen Unikat-Charakter verleiht – lässt sich ECHO auch im Raum visuell und akustisch neu entdecken und erleben.

Das Künstlerbuch ECHO kombiniert typografische Arbeiten in traditionellen Druckverfahren wie Buchdruck und Handpressendruck mit digitalen Drucktechniken, Laserdruck und Vinyl. Als Kunstprojekt erforscht es das kreative Potenzial des gedruckten Buches, indem es untersucht, wie sich Akustik in eine grafische Sprache übersetzen lässt und wie sich Räumliches im zweidimensionalen Raum der Seite umsetzen kann. Das Lesen von ECHO wird so zu einer aktiven, sinnlichen Erfahrung – ganz im Sinne der grundlegenden Intention des Künstlerkollektivs: die Schnittstellen von Klang, Schrift und Grafik zu erforschen und die Grenzen traditioneller Medien auszuloten.

ECHO is primarily a comprehensive study, in book form, of the acoustic phenomenon of echo and its historical context. The analysis is rooted in typography and graphic elements, playing with both the “form” and the meaning of the word echo across diverse cultural contexts.

At EAC (Les Halles) in Porrentruy, ECHO becomes a spatial installation. This reinterpretation of the book’s content is expanded through additions in the form of new works by the artist collective phono/graph as well as by the two artists invited by ebs, Václav Pozarek and Philippe Queloz. The result is a temporary, extended mode of reading that unfolds horizontally and vertically in the exhibition space.

The artist’s book ECHO combines typographic works created using traditional printing techniques, such as letterpress and hand press, with digital printing, laser printing, and vinyl. As an art project, it explores the creative potential of the printed book, investigating how acoustics can be translated into a graphic language and how spatiality can be realized within the two-dimensional page. Reading ECHO thus becomes an active, sensory experience—fully in line with the collective’s core intention: to explore the intersections of sound, writing, and graphics, and to push the boundaries of traditional media.
